What should I wear to a wedding?

Marriage is the beginning of September in the courtyard of the bride, very informal and low profile. My boyfriend loves the idea of something black and vintage … but I read that black and white are not nos … Black in particular to be mistaken for an informal daytime wedding. Not I've never been to a wedding and I have no idea what is appropriate. I was thinking one of those dresses halter … with a little cardigan over it. Is that even though random? In addition, the suit will format so any ideas on stores that carry decent looking clothes size would be more useful!
