Trying to tone my body?

I try to tone my body / lose some weight or fat enough for me to get into a size 4 or 5 jeans. I signed for a health club instead of Fitness. and they said the only way to tone is weightlifting. Is this true? I know how much weight lifting, but I feel so self conscious of weight lifting in front of everyone. So I just wanted to go jogging, running, cycling or swim or something instead to the gym and health club. Plus I want to lose a few pounds. Advice? Weightlifting is the only way to tone? Weight: £ 130 Age: 19 Height: 5 ft pant 5inches: 7 Heart rate / pulse before you: 90/60? something like that.

Strength training is the best thing do. You do not need heavy weights, light ones just to start. Check out "The Cardio Free Diet" by Dr. Jim Karas to your local library. He exercises absolute best you can do to help you tone your body and lose weight. There is also a diet plan there, but I not follow at all. Just read the beginning of the book to better understand why the exercises are more effective than any cardio workout and do the exercises. There are two different versions for the exercises in the book, one small hand weights (you do not really need if you are a beginner) and one with resistance bands. Do this for about 20-30 minutes four days a week and you'll see the difference! I promise! I lost about 60 lbs. and toned great time making weight. I find this book a few months after spending tons of money on a treadmill and I am, for example better with the book was free!
