Casual Friday: Putting the 'Video' in Video Games

This week, we give with more free TV, watch classic games full-motion video, and celebrate 13 years-plus command and conquer the world.

In our ongoing efforts to celebrate slack, I found some great new ways to kill what little free time you think you have this weekend and beyond. Well Well, what are you waiting for?

It is easy to draw comparisons between movies and games, but video game makers really aspired to be like big-time movie studios not too long ago. A little more than 10 years ago, recording studios together with actors charge of decorations, and cameramen filmed the full-motion video (FMV) for games. Why even raise this question? Well, this week marks the release of Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath on the PC. I'll take this game early. During his career 13-plus years, the series of C & C is now known for full-motion video quality cheese – and part real-time strategy, of course. Now the new game is out, and FMV is back, recorded HD. This means that you can see semifamous actors squirm in the spotlight HDTV wonder why they agreed to read the script.

This made me think that someone should set up a fitting tribute to some of the greatest "FMV performances" to ever grace a CD-ROM. So without further ado …

5. Mark Hamill (and a cast full of people like Malcolm McDowell, John Rhys-Davies, and … hmmm … Ginger Lynn Allen) in Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger. Honorable Mention for costumes huge Muppet-like.

4. Science fiction, detective series Tex Murphy, with … a group of people you probably do not know. The acting is pretty good, trying to mimic the atmosphere all black. And to a degree, it worked.

3. Command & Conquer: Red Alert (this clip starring Albert Einstein's stand-in). To me, Red Alert provided both great gameplay and many times memorable battlefield, Thanks for the video clips. Some were intentionally cheese, some not, but the big surprise is that they were actually decent. Crazy, I know.

2. Christopher Walken (!!!) in Ripper. Christoper Walken can be himself, reading the book phone, and I watched it. Put it in a video game, and it's magic on a disc.

1. The infamous Night Trap "with" Dana Plato and the refugees from some horrible 1980s slasher movie. A treat: You can see the whole game like a couple of painfully long videos if you really you hate. Or, if you consider yourself a glutton for punishment as minor, try the first 9 minutes on the size.
