Dry Ice Blasting, a new revolution in industrial cleaning

In today's world, where environmental concerns are increasing, demand for environmentally friendly cleaning methods is increasing. Traditional methods of cleaning such as pressure washing have examined. Companies are turning to other alternatives environmentally friendly.

What is Dry Ice

Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide (CO2). Dry Ice is as hard as plaster and under atmospheric pressure, it sublimes at a temperature of-78oC.

Ice Blasting

Dry ice blasting or CO2 blasting is a process in which dry ice (about the size of rice grains) are killed on a nozzle at a supersonic speed to rid materials, including waste oil, paint, ink, glue, dirt, grease, food, mold release agents, rubber and many other contaminants. The pellets are accelerated using compressed air. Upon impact the dry ice turns from a solid state in the gaseous state without passing through the liquid phase.

There are three phases in a dry ice blasting process.

Transfer Energy:
Kinetics is transferred when the spray gun fires pellets of dry ice on the surface. The dry ice pellets sublime moment of impact and is more flexible compared to other media such as cleaning sand, sand, or beads. Is a non-abrasive cleaning and does not cause damage to equipment.

Effect of heat shock Micro:
It occurs when the gel granules dry ice strike a much warmer surface contaminated leading to a thermal shock between the contamination of surface and substrate. At this stage, cracking and delamination of the contaminant occurs.

Thermal kinetic effect:
In the third and final stage, dry ice pellets, explode when in contact with the surface. As the dumplings hot, they convert the CO2 gas which expands rapidly underneath the contaminated surface. Then the contaminant falls either on the ground or take the air. The evaporation of dry ice and that the contaminant is left behind.

A safer process comparison

The dry ice blasting is very effective and safe process for the following and more:

• No water or chemicals drives are used in the process, so there is no more waste products.

• There is no risk of slippage as with the pressure washing process.

Precautions

However, certain precautions must be taken while driving the process:

• Good ventilation is essential. CO2 can be dangerous when concentrated in confined spaces. The CO2 is 50 percent more dense than air and can displace oxygen and choke a person if there is no ventilation.

• It is imperative to wear earplugs, the process generates a deafening noise.

• The temperature of dry ice can be as low as -110 degrees F and can instantly freeze the skin. Wear gloves when handling dry ice.

• Always use protective clothing protective face shield when handling pellets of CO2 or dry ice blasting unit.
