Is the media really to blame?

People blame the media for having actors in movies and models in magazines that are “too skinny.” They claim that “real” people don’t look like that and that it sets a bad image for young girls. I believe that the only thing that drives those types of media outlets is making money. They spend a lot of time, effort, and their own money trying to figure out what people want to see and in turn what will sell. I believe that the blame lies with us, the consumers, who like the “too skinny” models and actors. If we liked “real” people then you can bet that those fashion magazines would be filled with plus size people instead of the skinny and beautiful!

I think you are absolutely right! The industry is trying to make money, bottom line. Although many people blame the industry for putting out unattainable images of beauty, they do so because it sells. The images aren’t realistic but people always seem to want what they can’t have. In this country, in our American culture, overeating and inactivity, unfortunately, plague many, so the majority can’t look like fashion models and movie stars. The problem with young people is that they don’t always realize that the images portrayed by the media aren’t realistic. As a result, they may look down on themselves for not looking a certain way. Everyone should strive to be healthy of course but, I think the responsibility lies with parents to teach their young girls, especially, that they are beautiful. The media shouldn’t be the only source for defining beauty in a young person’s life.
