Hair transplantation – what are your options?

Hair transplantation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures chosen by men today.

A hair transplant is when the hair in an area not prone to balding (like the sides and rear your head) is taken and transplanted into the bald or thinning areas. The hair then continues to grow throughout your life and can give you a head full of hair that looks natural.

A hair transplant is the only real permanent solution for hair loss and baldness. However, it is an important decision to make and you should have all the facts before deciding to undergo a hair transplant surgery.

So just what are your options for surgery? Here is a brief overview of different types of procedures offered by hair transplant surgeons. (Note that all surgeons offer all options.)

Options for Hair Transplant Surgery:

In general, there are two types of transplant surgery: the noise and the FUE method.

Not all physicians implement the FUE method because it is relatively new and much longer (and costly for the patient).

Some surgeons also offer scar repair surgery (which is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of a scar hair transplant earlier) and as repairing hair transplant (eg fill density on a formerly poor transplant or redo the root hair, etc.) Again, not all surgeons perform this surgery then you might have to seek specialists in each field.

Whatever procedure you choose will depend on the extent of your personal needs. Your doctor can inform you about the risks, advantages and disadvantages of each method.

# 1) FUSS – Follicular Unit Strip Surgery

A narrow strip of hair is taken at the back of your scalp (when you are not subject to depletion). The grafts are then implanted in the balding area and most will continue to grow throughout your life. The donor site is closed with sutures or staples. They will be removed in a few days or absorbed.

Several factors (including the skills of your surgeon), minimal scarring that will occur in the donor area and the approximate downtime can run from one week to one month, depending on the situation.

A major advantage FUSS is that it grafts transplanted in one session (ie until 4000) so that results can be spectacular. If your surgeon may recommend the method is best for you, in general, the method works well for FUSS medium and large areas of baldness.

# 2) FUE – Follicular Unit Extraction

This is a new technique that some surgeons are starting to offer. It consists primarily from the harvest of each hair follicle separately from the rear and sides of the head (which are not subject to depletion). Then, each follicle is transplanted into the bald area. There is no cut or a surgical scalpel deep with this method.

Scars tend to be less compared to the method FUSS. In addition, according to some surgeons, recovery time can sometimes be shorter with EUF method (because there is not as deep surgery with agitation).

If your surgeon may recommend the method is best for you, in general, the FUE method works well for those who do not wish to have a scar, do not need a lot of transplants, or who want wear their hair very short.

3) Other procedures – Reduction of scalp

This surgery is much less frequent and less surgeons still offer them. A reduction in the scalp where the bald areas are removed surgically with the rest of the skin of the scalp has skin together to eliminate baldness. Depending on the size of the area of baldness, it is usually done in stages.

This is probably the procedure the most expensive and can run tens of thousands of dollars. Plus there are also risks such as tightness in your scalp, leading to a thinning of the skin and scars incorrect.

Whatever you decide to do, it is important to talk to your doctor before making any decision about your health. Hair transplantation is still evolving and improving so it is also important to examine that many surgeons as you can to get a good idea of what each can do for you.
