If the south of France, Cote d'Azur. I know what you think: expensive, clichéd. Think again.

I accepted going there for a week's holiday with a friend, mainly because I'd never been and is one of those famous places in all books and movies and gossip magazines. Oh, and because I really enjoy traveling with her. But as time grew closer, I started worry about money and, quite honestly, the level of my wardrobe. Hey, Brad and Angelina are there more and more their last baby, this is not shabby shorts and sandals functional beach holiday.

How wrong I was. I discovered that the south of France is one the most beautiful places on earth, it is more relaxed, fun, affordable and very, very welcoming.

We flew into the airport of Toulon on a cheap flight Ryanair from London. And sometimes, what you earn on airfares, you lose the time and cost of all other transfers. This is a small airport, but more practical if you stay in St Tropez (my advice: do not unless you are very rich), but not so good if you stay Lowest of the coast, where we were. We had to shuttle from the airport to Toulon itself, which took half an hour. He took us to the station from which we had to take a train to Nice, where we had booked an apartment for the week. Lesson learned: Nice has its own airport and easyJet it cheaply.

But the train from Nice were quite regular and took about two hours or less. It was beautiful to see all beautiful landscapes and begin to fully appreciate the glorious mountain and coastal is the Col de la Cote d'Azur and across cities legends such as Antibes and Cannes. And the train was my preferred configuration Dogbox so we ended up chatting with a charming French man in our compartment who worked at Monaco and offered to show us a few days later. He gave us his card and we promised to appeal. Unfortunately, shortly after we got off the train at Nice he texted my friend had found her luggage tag on the ground – not a good sign … we no appeal.

Our apartment was fantastic (via restricted nicepebbles.com). Much better than staying in a hotel because we had the space and privacy and could self-satisfied, which is not only a necessity in a city as large bakeries and cheese, etc., but is also cheaper.

The apartment was in the heart of the old town but very modern. We had the full experience of waking to the sound of French voice calls (usually with their garbage truck noise at 6:00, which took some of the romance out of it!), then down to the bakery corner of croissants and baguettes BEST I really enjoyed (Artisan Baker Street Marene). These things were dependency and bread so light I'm sure there was no risk of gaining weight …

We have become used to buy a loaf of bread every morning and make cheese rolls and salad to take on our daily excursions. It seems so sad, but when the cheese is that good and the supermarket is full beautiful things like confit of pear and fig puree to accompany your cheese, it is heavenly. I actually brought jars of these things home with me. I am sure the French scoff at the idea – like taking the equivalent of peanut butter, no doubt, but the platitudes of a countries are the joy of this journey.

The best piece of advice we have given is that all regional buses in this part of the world today cost € 1 per trip. So it was really affordable way to enjoy the coast. The bus terminal is located right on the edge of the old city. Armed with sticks, comfortable shoes (I had to buy flat shoes with heels only taken in anticipation of a glamorous life), almost every morning We found hopping on a bus at a fabulous place. In fact, it is a little off – As we ate croissants and had a little time explore the old city of Nice, walking along the beach or on the hill (known as the castle) for coffee in sight, we did not usually a good start on our day trips until early afternoon.

The best thing about catching buses has been to see the landscape and houses. And wow, the blue water in this part of the world! Côte d'Azur is not a lie – it is the most blue water I've ever seen.
Excursion to Eze

We first visited Eze, a beautiful walled medieval city perched on the sea is winding, narrow streets and steps (no cars), and stone houses. Up top is a beautiful cactus garden, worth the entrance fee (about 5 euros I remember), including a garden of contemplation large wooden chairs, where you can elongate and look down along the coast – divine! From there, we saw umbrellas on a terrace and felt the temptation to drink a glass with the best view in the world.

We ended our way back Eze and found the Chateau Eza Hotel. It has only 10 rooms and we could have a hot chocolate on the terrace. Around us, people attended the cut champagne by waiters in uniform, but the hot chocolate was more our budget and it was very good, presented in a white pot and delicious. And the view worth the price … (Which was not as strange as it might be). You do not need to be rich to live the life of the famous and glamorous, even if just for a moment.

The return trip was less charming – a trick to learn is that the last buses are often quite early – about 19:15, in this case, and not to be missed or if you're stuck. Taxis are rare and very expensive.

Another trick when visiting Eze (and you must!) is to catch the right bus. Do not get the Eze Sea (or something like that) – it will take you to the part of the city next water at the bottom of the hill. Then you have an hour or more walk straight up the hill on a stony track favored by the philosopher Nietzsche. If you no mountain goat, I do not recommend it. We got lucky by getting on the bus to Eze – courtesy hours not good planning. (You can also book a visit to Eze and Monaco from Nice on Viator website.)
Day trip to Antibes and Monaco

Another place we was visited Antibes, which is a pretty small town. One of our main reasons for going there is the Picasso Museum – he spent much time painting it. Unfortunately was closed for renovation – and had been for two years! The pitfalls of buying guides old hand! But the city has been worth the trip and got some great gifts for friends. Oh, and the museum reopens later this year. He narrowly missed …

We also made the obligatory visit to Monaco. This legendary place we attracted by promises of fast cars and fashion fabulous. Therefore we put on our prettiest dresses and favorite shoes, riding our bus budget and headed for the mythical place to change lives. Well done. I hated so much I had my first cigarette in years! Yep, do not go.

I think part of the problem is that they have been development for the Grand Prix this year so it was noisy and dusty and difficult to walk. I was also surprised by what a concrete jungle, it is. Building pell-mell over each other and nothing pretty to see in any direction. Another problem was not knowledge premises – a shame as the man on the train we missed. We visited the royal castle – it worthwhile for the mills and the style of 1980s portrait Boon Princess Grace and the family, had a hot chocolate terrible, but I confused the casino, but drank cosmopolitans expensive to numb the shame, then took a bus to return to our beloved Nice for a dinner and wonder why we never left.

A couple recommendations for dinner in Nice: In the market just back from the seafront There are many seafood restaurants and the food is really wonderful. Prices also marvel. Instead I had a delicious plate of mussels (mussels) to the cheaper more local coffee Socca. (On a corner Mascoina). Communal benches in the street, a window you order, a simple menu and one of the most delicious things you've tasted. Try pissaladier – Onion local pizza olive and anchovies – yum!

You can also visit Oliviera. On the Rue du Collet, this restaurant specializes in small olive oil with each course and the fabulous owner / home / lover gives you a different tasting oil. They also sell (obviously), but the large size of the bottle was a bit of a deterrent.

Another local favorite for food and the atmosphere was a cafe called Gesu Gesu, street opposite the church – great service and friendly young boys at the next table we even bought Cognac. Follow up by one of some 90 flavors of ice cream Fennocio – I recommend the purple or pink or ginger, cinnamon …
