Hot and dry on the North Coast Trail

If you're hiking, or camping on the coast of British Columbia, you'll have to plan rain, and probably made you all wet. Some hikes coastal British Columbia are wetter than others because of exposure Pacific or more northern areas. The North Coast Trail in Cape Scott Provincial Park on Vancouver Island and the path in Naikoon Naikoon Provincial Park Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte) are two relatively well developed increases, which are prone to extremes of this type of exposure, but any other Vancouver Island or the Washington State Coastal Trail would qualify. To be comfortable in this environment, you will need how to cope with the humidity. And that's exactly what we do here.

First, let's look at the hike. The most important part of dry, hot hiking is the system you have for your clothes. Clothing should be the right fabrics to stay dry and warm. You need a set of dry clothes just for the camp, and this assembly must be completely sealed in a bag inside your pack. This set of clothing may include another layer of dry basis, but at least should be sufficiently insulating layer to keep you warm with little or no activity. I usually hike with two light and a fleece mid-weight, over a layer Additional background in case, and a pair of pants quite heavy. I use my equipment to rain as a windbreak and retention of supplemental heat layer.

Your bagging system is essential to maintaining the drought. The old standard plastic garbage bags inside tote bags work, but need care and attention to maintain. Recent years have seen extremely lightweight dry bags placed on the market. You can get these different sizes, which is what you need. Again, this is where your store outdoors can be very helpful. If you're dealing with larger bulky items, like a sleeping bag, then you have other issues and options.

Most bags are bomb-proof synthetic fill bags, because they retain their insulating abilities even when wet. Down bags lose their insulating ability if the wet feathers. Both down and synthetic filling bags can be bulky, but it can be compressed easily. Bags are available very slight compression. The Coast Trail North and Naikoon involve some fords the creek or river, so the start protection is important. Make sure your boots are completely sealed before leaving. If they flee, try to repair the leaking areas and apply sealing compound conditioning / leather and other superior materials. If the water is above the top of boot, there is no way to stop the water from getting in. mud puddles are another matter. Gaiters that connect the top and bottom of a hiking boot and run up the leg can prevent a lot of moisture inside the boots. For the North Shore Trail, boots are essential gear. Boggy mountain trails are part of the length, and try to around them is next to impossible and very very long. Walk straight muddy patches and puddles of water can take an hour per day or more. Modern lightweight sheets are a great way to help prevent moisture from invading everything you have. They provide an important shelter for cooking and eating areas, and can be placed to cover the door of the tent so you can come and go without getting wet. This is very useful must make when wet outer layers before entering the tent or have a dry and put on a raincoat and boots before to break camp. Make sure you have knowledge on how to set up a tarp to protect and to pour water. This is not rocket science but a little knowledge and practice it is much easier when you have to do in the field and make it rain with cold hands.

Last, there some small things that add extra comfort while traveling is cold and wet. A Nalgene bottle or a bottle of drink with others, can be used as a hot water bottle inside layers of clothing while finishing up together to cook and eat dinner. They are also very pleasant inside sleeping bags at night. Small chemical hand warmer can also help keep warm the figures, particularly when must make fiddly, detailed work with hands, such as repairing equipment, or even cooking. Modern materials and equipment make it much easier than in the past, be both good for protection against heat and humidity, and light weight is. simple techniques and a little knowledge and planning go a long way to ensure you stay warm and dry.
