Ruby Slippers

The ruby slippers are the magical shoes worn by Dorothy (played by Judy Garland) in the 1939 MGM film The Wizard of Oz. In film, Dorothy acquires the slippers after her house falls and kills the Wicked Witch of the East, freeing the Munchkins from the tyranny of the witch. In return its unintended benefit, Dorothy receives the slippers to protect her sister from the vengeful witch, the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy knows the slippers are magical, but it is not aware of their specific skills. Only at the end of the film does Glinda the good witch North, reveal the slippers' secret: Whenever Dorothy wishes, she can go home to Kansas by simply clicking her heels three times and repeating, " There is no place like home ".

The ruby slippers were designed by Adrian Gilbert. It is speculated that at least seven pairs were made in sizes from Judy Garland 5 and 6, four pairs used in the film have been recorded for today, and an "Arab torque test" which was used in tests of costumes, but not seen in the final image. One pair is on permanent display at the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC [1]. This pair does not correspond to (the front right top left, see picture), fueling speculation that several slippers may exist. The other pairs are held by private collectors Philip Samuels and David Elkouby. A pair of sophisticated wound foot, not used in the film, is owned by actress and memorabilia preservationist Debbie Reynolds. Another unused, bugle pair was made Pearl and Richard Thorpe directed the film. The whereabouts of the couple are unknown.

The four pairs of shoes used in the film was originally white silk pumps from the Innes Shoe Company in Los Angeles, and are embossed gold or silver stamp or label embroidered cloth, skin white kid shoe sole right. At the time, many movie studios used plain white silk shoes because they were inexpensive and easily dyed. It is likely that most of the shoes worn by female characters in The Wizard of Oz were clear shoes with different heel Innes variable, dyed to match each costume. Garland wore a primary pair during shooting. This pair can be seen when the witch tries to catch them now while Dorothy and her friends in her castle in captivity, and at the climax of the movie, when Dorothy taps her heels to return Kansas. The whole "sister" to this pair is owned by Michael Shaw, who obtained them from Kent Warner in 1970. This pair can be clearly seen in the final film when Dorothy shows the ruby slippers to the Emerald City doorman. This pair has been missing since he was stolen from an exhibition at Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. [2] The last known pair was made for Bobbie Koshay, Judy stunt double. It is probably 6B size pair (owned by Roberta Bauman, Anthony Landini, and current owner David Elkouby) whose lining says "Double" instead of "Judy Garland". Judy may have worn this pair for photos and publicity appearances after the primary film shooting was completed in 1939.

At a 1970 MGM auction, a pair sold for $ 15,000 (the pair now on permanent display in the wing popular culture, American history Museum, The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.). Another pair was held by a woman from Tennessee, Roberta Bauman who won in a name "the best films of 1939 "contest at his high school. It belongs to them until 1988, when she sold them to the east of the auction house Christie's for $ 165,000 plus commission. Anthony Landini bought shoes, and immediately started showing them at the Disney / MGM Studios The Great Movie Ride at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. This pair was offered by the private sector Christie's to the under-bidder shoes Bauman. Philip Samuels of St. Louis, Missouri purchased for the same price that Anthony paid $ 165,000. Samuels has used his shoes to the collection of funds for children's charities as well as loans to the Smithsonian when their slippers are cleaned, repaired or (previously) on tour. Landini auctioned his pair of slippers off, again to the east of Christie's, May 24, 2000 for $ 666,000, that includes the buyers premium and the Commission to the auction house. They were sold to David Elkouby and its partners, which have souvenir shops in Hollywood. Elkouby was convicted of selling costumes stolen from movie sets. [Edit] Elkouby and Co. have yet to show out the shoes. Yet another pair of ruby slippers from the film, the ownership of Michael Shaw, was exhibited in the Oz Museum in Wamego, Kansas. They have been stolen from the Judy Garland museum, which is part of the Children's Discovery Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, in August 2005 and have yet to be recovered. The Ruby Slippers play yet another essential role in the 1985 Disney film "Return to Oz," for which Disney had to obtain rights from MGM to use reproductions in the film. [3] Unlike the slippers used in the 1939 film, hand-made British-coil heel shoes for Return to Oz were covered with hundreds red crystals. [3] The stones were soaked in sulfuric acid to remove the support of money [3], and two types of glue were used to put on shoes (a spray glue and glue optical). Whatever has been done, the stones would not stay in place and kept fall during filming. [3] Effects were added later in post production to give the light of their slippers. Simple, grosgrain ribbon with additional rock have been used for bows. Four pairs were made for shooting: a pair, one size, for Ozma (Emma Ridley), two pairs, size 2, for Dorothy (Fairuza Balk), and a pair, size 10 men, because Gnome King (Nicol Williamson). Stagehands were specifically hired to sweep loose "Ruby" that fall, the slippers after a scene was filmed. Fairuza and Emma, the little girls they were, could not help playing, jumping and tapping their heels, so eventually they were necessary to remove the slippers between takes. In 1985, the Walt Disney Company has distributed a pair of slippers to promote the film. They were won by a British family, who sold them to Oz for Willard Carroll collector in an auction eBay 2001.

Western Costume Company in Hollywood claims to have made original slippers Judy Garland. Although it is likely that Western were hired to be part of The Wizard of Oz, many costumes, no trace of the original slippers are to validate its claim. In 1989, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the movie, Western has produced the only authorized Ruby Slipper reproductions. Hand lasted Judy Garland original foot mold and completely sequined and jeweled, slippers reproduction were almost identical to the originals. Western planned a limited edition of 500 pairs at $ 5,000 each, but the project stopped after selling only 16 pairs.

A pair of slippers Ruby imitation of the film appeared in 2002, the Master of Disguise. Another pair appeared in a sequence of Oz in the cult comedy Kentucky Fried Movie.
