Michigan … What are the best places to live?

My wife and I can move to Michigan (much work for her). What areas that we should consider? We prefer a more urban area with a certain culture, if possible. We are moving from Southern California, but we want move to a smaller city size, but big enough for entertaining. Plus I love the water. I am a packaging / graphic designer so I'd be looking a region may have some organisms or companies .. Ideas? What is it like to live there and the cities would be best?
